The customer is the Benedictine Grand Abbey of Pannonhalma, which was founded in 996 and has been continuously operating ever since. Pannonhalma is one of Hungary's outstanding historical cities, religious and art centre.
Our office is the general designer of this international 5-star hotel, which is part of the Marriott Autograph Collection. The opening date is currently uncertain, construction has not yet begun. The design area is located in the centre of Pannonhalma in the protected area of the Baroque style Abbey manor building complex.
Part of the manor complex is the early brick-vaulted wine cellar system. In terms of mass formation, the main character of the new constructions is given by the characteristic shape and rhythm of the vaults. The flat, green-roofed masses cut into the hillside create a visual balance between the man-made and natural environments. Vaulted arcades in the direction of the inner courtyards flank the buildings of simple layouts. The interior facades of the two-story buildings are treated as one, and show a clean, proportionate image.
A green roof and, in some places, small-scale superstructures following the archaic building form are built on top of the resulting masses. The superstructures have a strongly pierced structure, the main focus is on the Pannonhalm skyline, which thus floats into the space and forms a unity with the building interior. The new wing designed for the reception follows the mass proportions of the listed building, and is visually and physically connected to it with its roof design. From an architectural point of view, it is separated from the listed building by the simple and clear use of materials and form of the light-transmitting stone cladding.
